Ryan Rambudhan is a founding partner of NOVA Defenders, S&R Law Firm, PLLC, and a Virginia criminal defense trial lawyer who has represented people accused of crimes since 2013. He handles misdemeanor and felony cases throughout Northern Virginia and across the Commonwealth, helping clients protect their freedom, driving privileges, careers, professional standing, families, and reputations.

Ryan believes effective criminal defense begins with listening carefully, explaining the law honestly, and preparing early. He approaches every case with the possibility of trial in mind, while recognizing that strong advocacy also requires sound judgment about negotiation, treatment, restitution, and mitigation. His goal is not simply to resolve a charge, but to place each client in the strongest possible position both inside and outside the courtroom.

DUI defense is a substantial part of Ryan’s practice. He represents clients in cases ranging from first-offense DUI allegations to second, third, fourth, and subsequent offenses, as well as drug-related DUI, refusal, serious crash, and DUI manslaughter cases. His advanced DUI training includes the National College for DUI Defense’s intensive Summer Session conducted at Harvard Law School.

Ryan’s approach to DUI defense was also shaped early by two distinct experiences in New York. During a judicial clerkship for the Honorable Francis Ricigliano, who presided over DWI matters, Ryan researched DWI statutes and constitutional issues and drafted proposed legal opinions. He later externed with the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office in a division handling DWI prosecutions. Those experiences gave him different perspectives on how DUI cases are analyzed and prepared and helped shape the evidence-focused approach he now brings to the defense.

Ryan understands that DUI defense requires command of both the law and the science. He examines breath and blood testing, toxicology findings, laboratory procedures, chain of custody, measurement uncertainty, prescription medications, controlled substances, crash evidence, vehicle data, and causation. He has worked with qualified experts, obtained independent laboratory analysis, and evaluated crash-reconstruction evidence when the circumstances require it. In repeat-offense cases, he also examines whether the Commonwealth can properly prove and use prior Virginia or out-of-state convictions as predicates for an enhanced DUI charge.

Ryan also regularly represents individuals charged with reckless driving by speed, general reckless driving, racing, hit-and-run, felony eluding, and other serious driving offenses. These cases may turn on speed-measurement evidence, identification, officer observations, body-worn camera footage, witness accounts, statements, accident evidence, or whether the prosecution can prove the mental state required by the charge. Although some may think of these as traffic cases, the consequences can include incarceration, license suspension, employment problems, security-clearance concerns, and a permanent criminal conviction.

His practice extends well beyond driving offenses. Ryan handles domestic assault and battery, petit larceny, grand larceny, complex credit card fraud and financial crimes, drug possession and distribution, violent offenses, and other serious misdemeanor and felony allegations. His courtroom experience includes bench and jury trials involving charges ranging from reckless driving to rape. Domestic assault cases represent a particularly significant part of his practice and often require careful analysis of conflicting statements, self-defense, 911 calls, body-worn camera recordings, physical evidence, protective orders, and family dynamics.

Ryan frequently represents clients whose cases involve mental-health conditions, addiction, alcohol dependence, or substance-use disorders. He does not reduce a person to a charge or to one difficult moment. When appropriate, he develops treatment, counseling, recovery, restitution, and other mitigation evidence while continuing to challenge what the Commonwealth can actually prove.

Although Ryan’s office is located near the Fairfax County Courthouse, his practice is not confined to Fairfax. He appears frequently in Fairfax, Prince William, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun, Stafford, Fauquier, and other Northern Virginia courts, and he accepts cases throughout Virginia. He takes pride in understanding the local procedures, practices, and expectations of each court rather than treating every jurisdiction as interchangeable.

Ryan serves as a Director of the Fairfax Bar Association and as Co-Vice Chair of its Criminal Practice Section, where he helps lead programming and collaborates with members of the criminal bar to strengthen courtroom advocacy. He develops and teaches continuing legal education programs for practicing attorneys, including recent programs addressing domestic-assault advocacy, modern policing, and evidentiary issues.

From 2016 through 2019, Ryan served as an adjunct professor at The George Washington University Law School, teaching legal research and writing and appellate oral advocacy. That experience reinforced skills central to his trial practice: analyzing a record, identifying the controlling issue, writing with precision, and presenting a clear and persuasive argument under pressure.
